Create a “move” file.

Transfer property, fire, earthquake insurance to new address.

Notify all other service providers such as medical and auto insurance

Contact any clubs or associations you are affiliated with for information on transferring, selling or ending your memberships.

Carry irreplaceable stuff with you such as photos, videos, jewelry, wills, etc.

Start becoming acclimated to your new community. Contact the Chamber of Commerce or Visitor's Bureau to request information on schools, parks and recreation, community calendars and maps.

Start collecting suitable containers and packing materials if you plan to do any part of the packing yourself.

Interview movers.

Hire a baby sitter to entertain and keep young kids safe.

Call the utility companies Electricity, phone, gas, water, garbage--to be  disconnected from your present home after your scheduled move-out.

Make sure utilities are on in your new home.

Start packing those items you don't use often.

Clean and clear your home including closets, basements and attics.

Dispose of flammables such as fireworks, cleaning fluids, matches, acids, chemistry sets, aerosol cans, paint, ammunition and poisons such as weed killer.

Keep life simple for a couple weeks.  Frozen food for lunch/dinner works great.

Transfer all current prescriptions to a new drugstore, closer to

your new home.

Drain all the oil and gasoline from your lawn mower and power tools to ensure safe transportation.

Categorize your boxes.  Put stickers.  Do Not Load stickers—for boxes that will go with you.  Fragile stickers on delicate items.  Load last stickers--those that will need to come out first. Pack your suitcases and confirm your personal travel arrangements (flights, hotel, rental cars, etc.) for your family. Try to keep your plans as flexible as possible in the event of an Make sure your agent knows the address and phone number where you can be reached until you get into your new home.

Empty, defrost, and clean your refrigerator and freezer, and clean your stove, all at least 24 hours before moving to let them air out. Try using baking soda to get rid of any odors.

Prepare a temporary kit that will have things you will need for a few days—toothbrushes, toiletries, school bags, etc.

 

Move out Day

Beds should be loaded last, so they come off first.

Personally attend to the loading and unloading.  Have your checklist handy with you.

Make sure the new home is cleaned and carpets are dry prior to arrival.

Ensure that the home is clean and ready for new Buyer.

 

Move in Day

Keep your checkbook and your wallet closeby.

Ensure utilities have been connected.

Preplan where your furniture will go in advance, and hand a copy of the plan to your movers.
